Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the page turned vertically, there is a single line in pencil below the gutter concluding an extensive inscription beginning on folio 13 verso opposite (D08304). Like the rest of the passage, it is effectively illegible.
Below this line are the following accounts in pounds, shillings and pence, in ink except for the total and the underlining above it, which are in pencil:
            July 21 1813
           C.   .   R.    N .
          1600       2693 . 9 3, – 4406.8.10
            June 16 260
            July 21 400
                        3353, 9, 3
The total for the central column is offset to the right because of a separate sum, scribbled with a rather blunt pencil, which commences just below the penultimate line, and was presumably already there:
            4401
            2723
            1    [i.e.1000]
            8124
There is a separate calculation of the sum of the figures in the upper inscription on folio 13 verso opposite (D08304). ‘C’ stands for Consols (consolidated stock) and ‘R’ for Reduced stocks. The figure for Navy (‘N’) stocks, £4406 eight shillings and ten pence, appears again on folios 12 verso, 13 recto and verso and 14 verso (D08302, D08303, D08306) and in the Hastings sketchbook (Tate D07670; Turner Bequest CXI 49). ‘260’, with the associated date 16 June 1813 also occurs on D08302 and undated in a sum on folio 15 recto (D08307). ‘4401’, in the second sum, is also on folio 8 verso (D08296). The total ‘3353, 9, 3’ under the upper central column may be related to the ‘3393’ given on D08306 and D08307. For more on Turner’s finances as set out in the extensive notes in this sketchbook, see the Introduction.
Technical notes
:
Ruskin’s folio number is unusually far from the corner, and the Finberg number is stamped over it.
