There are trees or hills in the distance at the centre, beyond what appear to be domestic buildings on the left and a small bridge in the right foreground. The sketch continues on folio 2 verso opposite (D08285). There are various identified and likely subjects along the River Thames in this sketchbook, as discussed in the Introduction.
Turner has scribbled some figures – presumably financial memoranda – in heavy pencil at the top right. They are in two rows, but only ‘100’ at the start of the lower row is absolutely clear. The sequence appears to continue with ‘6712 24[...]’, and the last number, beginning ‘18’, may be a year date. For more on Turner’s finances as set out in the extensive notes in this sketchbook, see the Introduction.
Technical notes:
The inscription at the top right is badly rubbed, and is offset onto folio 2 verso opposite (D08285).
