The view continues to the right across folio 18 recto opposite (D13779). The present half comprises what seems to be a slight sketch of the bend in the Thames at Glover’s Island below Richmond Hill, which features in many sketches and finished works by Turner, including the large oil England: Richmond Hill, on the Prince Regent’s Birthday, exhibited in 1819 (Tate N00502).1 On the opposite page the horizon appears to be inscribed ‘Windsor’, marking the location of the castle about thirteen miles west of the hill. Heathrow Airport now lies directly in this line of sight, though the castle can still just be made out in clear conditions.
Drawings on the preceding and subsequent double-page spreads, folios 16 verso–17 recto (D13776, D13777) and 18 verso–19 recto (D13780, D13781) may also show the Thames Valley.
