Joseph Mallord William Turner Two Views of Bolton Abbey from the North 1816

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 8 Recto:
Two Views of Bolton Abbey from the North 1816
D09851
Turner Bequest CXXXIV 54
Pencil on white wove paper with gilt edges, 179 x 254 mm
Watermark ‘J Whatm | 1811’
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘cattle [...oo...]’ centre left, and ‘D W’ centre right of original portion of leaf, both at foot of upper drawing
Blind-stamped with Turner Bequest monogram bottom right
Stamped in black ‘CXXXIV – 54’ bottom right of original portion of leaf

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Both sketches, one above the other and separated by a horizontal pencil line, focus on the ruined east end of Bolton Abbey, seen to the south across the River Wharfe from on or near the road to Barden Tower (see folio 15 verso; D09860; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 59a). ‘D W’ probably indicates ‘dark water’; there are similar notes elsewhere in this sketchbook. For other views of the abbey see under folio 7 recto (D09874; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 73).
Technical notes:
About 85 mm is missing from the outer part of the original leaf; the loss has been made good with slightly darker paper.
