This drawing has been cited as the basis of the watercolour of about 1818 showing Lindley Hall from Lake Tiny on the Farnley Hall estate (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery),1 despite the fact that it ‘differs in a number of details ... for example, the lake does not occupy the whole of the foreground.’2 In fact, a similar study, perhaps made in 1814, in the smaller Devon Rivers, No.2 sketchbook (Tate D09784; Turner Bequest CXXXIII 81a) shows the view north over the lake (left blank in the foreground), exactly as in the Birmingham watercolour. The present drawing is more detailed, particularly in the architecture of the hall, but the alignment of the various landscape features is slightly different, and it appears to have been drawn from the north-western edge of the lake. There is a slight continuation on folio 5 verso opposite (D09802; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 12v).
For Lindley Hall and other views, see under folio 2 recto (D09803; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 13), and for other subjects at and around Farnley and nearby Yorkshire properties belonging to Walter Fawkes see under folio 1 verso (D09790).
