This is one of a number of studies of hulks (decommissioned, dismasted warships) interspersed with topographical sketches in the Hamoaze and lower reaches of the River Tamar north-west of Plymouth Sound between folios 3 recto and 29 recto (D09671–D09703). Divorced from any indication of their setting, the carefully drawn sterns of the two old warships, anchored side by side, are seen here from the starboard; the nearest has an additional structure with a pitched roof built onto its forecastle.
