The view is from below the south-eastern flank of the Citadel, looking south-west across Plymouth Sound to Drake’s Island, with Mount Edgcumbe outlined beyond. Compare the views on folios 2 recto and verso (D09669, D09670), under the first of which other Plymouth subjects are noted. Thomas Daniell’s 1825 aquatint Mount Edgecumbe, from the Citadel, Plymouth (Tate impression: T03004) for his Voyage round Great Britain, shows the same features from a higher viewpoint.
