Finberg’s reading of Turner’s inscription as ‘Malvern’ seems improbable, as the setting is likely to Devon rather than the Midlands. The first letter of the word, overwriting ‘High’, appears rather to be a ‘W’, with little certainty as to what follows. There appear to be rocky outcrops or boulders in the foreground, and it seems likely that the subject is on Dartmoor; for other definite or likely views, see under folio 8 recto (D09489).
