The main sketch records the view from immediately below the outer bailey of Scarborough Castle, with the entrance gate and keep above left, and this is continued southwards along the curtain wall above right. Turner recorded almost exactly the same material in two other sketches in the sequence (D11949, 11943; Turner Bequest CL 30, 24), taken from a similar viewpoint, sufficiently further south to bring the entrance gate into view and to open up a little more of the south-east range. It seems likely that the few lines on D11916 (Turner Bequest CL 2a) represent the further continuation of this sketch to the right, suggesting that Finberg’s pagination bore some relationship to the original order of the sketchbook.
