This sketch records the view from below the southern corner of the ward of Scarborough Castle, looking almost due south down to the outer jetty of Scarborough Harbour with the castle wall descending steeply towards the harbour. White Nab is visible in the distance above the end of the jetty, with Osgodby Point further left, and Lebberston Cliff towards Filey Brigg in the far distance left. Turner made a second sketch from a similar but more advanced viewpoint (D11923; Turner Bequest CL 7a).
