J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

This is the continuation to the right of the previous double-page spread depicting a summer house on Lake Tiny near Farnley Hall (D12000–D12001; Turner Bequest CLIII 3a–4), panning right to include a rustic boathouse. The main sketch served as the basis of a finished watercolour called Grounds of Farnley Hall (private collection)1 painted for Walter Fawkes of Farnley about 1818. Turner did not refer to this continuation in the finished composition. See notes to D12000 for Jan Piggott’s misidentification of the summer house as the Pheasant’s [or ‘Peasant’s’] Nest, actually sited elsewhere, on the banks of the River Washburn near Leathley.
