This drawing is one of three (including Tate D12122 and D40073; Turner Bequest CLIV Xa, Xb) on the front and back of a single sheet of paper, folded in half. In the Inventory Finberg listed each as a separate item, and each individual component drawing has been stamped with its own Turner Bequest number; consequently, each also has its own Tate accession number and is treated separately in this catalogue. For clarity, the present drawing forms the verso; D12122 and D40073 (CLIV Xa, Xb) are on the recto.
The present sketch is a very hasty note of the view of two figures, almost certainly companions from Farnley Hall, standing atop Caley Crags at the east end of Otley Chevin. Turner sketched a similar subject in a colour study of Sunset over Wharfedale from Caley Park (Tate D25219; TB CCLXIII 97).
