Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner based his Liber Studiorum plate Chain of Alps from Grenoble to Chamberi on this view; the study for it is Tate D08153; Turner Bequest CXVII Y. Forrester suggests that he may have selected the subject as a contrasting pair to Peat Bog, Scotland, representing sun and rest instead of rain and toil.
This watercolour was withdrawn from the Fourth Loan Collection in 1906 owing to serious fading of indigo wash.

Inscribed ?by a later hand in pencil ‘Valley of the Rhone’, and ‘26’ (crossed through) and ‘13’
