Turner’s label ‘Le Petit Pont G C’ presumably refers to this drawing and occasioned the title given to it by John Ruskin. The bridge can be identified as the Pont Pérant in the Gorges du Guiers Mort near St Laurent-du-Pont. The recurrence of this picturesque subject in nineteenth-century artists’ sketchbooks and literary travelogues has been remarked by Professor Yves Bouchet.1
In his discussion of the varied graphic styles in evidence in this sketchbook, Gerald Wilkinson singled out this drawing for its ‘stability’ and ‘as a foretaste of the dovetailed finality of some the Liber Studiorum compositions’.
