Turner’s label for this drawing is inscribed ‘Entrance to the Petit Chartreuse with Voreppe Post House’. The cabriolet in which he travelled in 1802 (see also in D40208 from this sketchbook) is parked outside the posting inn on the left, on the side of the road. David Hill suggests that its presence indicates an overnight stop en route from Lyons. The Grande Aiguille rises in the background.
