The aqueduct and tower at Arcueil are depicted in the two sketches at the top of the page, the second being a more distant view. These formed the compositional basis of two oil sketches by Turner: Tate N03387, and N02992,1 both catalogued by Butlin and Joll as Italian subjects.2 There are further sketches of the aqueduct on folios 12 and 12 verso (Tate D24522, D24523; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 12, 12a); see also inside back cover (Tate D41261).
The two sketches at the bottom of the page depict a road leading up a hill towards a windmill and a hillside with three windmills (inscribed ‘sheep’). Ian Warrell has suggested these may have been made at Montparnasse.3
