One of only three watercolours in this sketchbook, this sky study depicts a sunset with a red sky and dark clouds. There is another, though slighter, sky study on folio 4 (Tate D18530; Turner Bequest CCXI 4) and a nude on folio 28 verso (Tate D18568; Turner Bequest CCXI 28a). In addition there is a sky study in blue watercolour on a page that once belonged to this sketchbook and has been cut in two. One half is now bound in the Mortlake and Pulborough sketchbook (Tate D18839; Turner Bequest CCXIII 90), while the other half is unbound (D40311).
