Turner inscribed these three sketches ‘Fulham Bridge’. Each shows the multi-arched bridge over the Thames from a different angle from a terrace. The bottom sketch includes a screen of trees with two figures at the right. On the recto of this page is a sketch of a screen of trees and the arch of a bridge which is likely to have been made at Fulham also: folio 2 (Tate 18527; Turner Bequest CCXI 2). A sketch of cows in a meadow on folio 38 verso (Tate D18584; Turner Bequest CCXI 38a) is also executed in the same manner so may have been made on the same occasion. Turner made a composition study of a view at nearby Twickenham on folio 41 (Tate D18589; Turner Bequest CCXI 41).
