The sketch of shipping off the coast across the lower half of the page has been identified as a view of Dover with the castle, indicating that Turner returned from his French tour in 1821 via Calais to Dover;1 compare to Tate D18154 (Turner Bequest CCVIII U). There is a more distant view of the English coast above, and two boxed-off sketches of shipping at the top of the page.
