This sketch records the view from above the village of Lindale, near Grange-over-Sands, looking out over Castle Head in the middle distance to Arnside Knott beyond and in the right distance the great sweep of Morecambe Bay as far as Heysham Head. The sketch served as the basis of an unfinished studio watercolour (Tate D25473; Turner Bequest CCLXIII 350), which was presumably intended (had it been completed) for engraving in Thomas Dunham Whitaker’s projected seven–volume General History of the County of York (see sketchbook introduction). The present writer has dated this sketch to Monday 5 August 1816.
Turner also sketched Castle Head, from a closer viewpoint, in the Yorkshire 4 sketchbook (D11501–D11502; Turner Bequest CXLVII 36a–37).
