This is the left part of a double-page spread continued to the right on folio 8 recto (D11589; Turner Bequest CXLVIII 38, now bound opposite), recording the view from the left bank of the River Lune looking downstream to Lancaster with Thomas Harrison’s new bridge in the middle distance, and the church and castle beyond. Turner made a preliminary sketch of this view, from slightly further away from the bridge, in the Yorkshire 2 sketchbook (Tate D11152; Turner Bequest CXLV 74a). The present writer has dated Turner’s sketches of Lancaster to Thursday 8 August 1816.
