Mill Gill Falls is the first or ‘lower’ fall on Mill Gill, about half a mile above Askrigg in Wensleydale. In this sketch Turner records the view from the top of the falls towards Askrigg village, with the tower of Askrigg Church to the right of centre, Ivy Scar above to the left, and in the distance the sweep of Wensleydale towards Aysgarth with Penhill beyond. Turner made a very detailed drawing of Mill Gill Falls from below in the Yorkshire 5 sketchbook (Tate D11552–D11551; Turner Bequest CXLVIII 18–17a), which accompanied him on the same tour.
It seems that Turner must have dropped his sketchbook while making this drawing. The surface of the page is spattered with what appears to be dried mud.
