The subject of this landscape sketch is currently unidentified. It appears to depict a town or village lying with an open plain beneath mountains and therefore may represent a distant view of Susa, the first town in Italy after crossing through the Alps at Mont Cenis. Alternatively it may show a location on the approach to Monte Cenis from the French side.1 The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 2 (D14146).
