This landscape sketch continues the view from the opposite sheet of the double-page spread which depicts the Monte Mario and the River Tiber from the south, see folio 5 verso (D16166). This half of the prospect, however, shows the plains of the Roman Campagna with a distant line of mountains to the north of the city. Turner has left the foreground virtually devoid of detail although the building hinted at on the far right may be the Castel Sant’Angelo. His viewpoint may have been the Janiculum Hill.
