The north front of Gibside is represented as a blank rectangle on the skyline at the centre of this slight sketch. Turner’s viewpoint is beside the River Derwent, north-east of the house and north of the column, at a point that can be placed at about the centre of the detailed two-page view from further north-east on folios 9 verso–10 recto (D12267, D12268; Turner Bequest CLVI 5a–6).
