A closer view of the same wrecks, with salvagers at work on the beach, is on folio 10 of the sketchbook (D05437). Finberg’s suggestion that the present sketch was made at Folkestone is unconfirmed; there is also some resemblance to Hastings. This leaf was shown with folio 18 (D05444; Turner Bequest LXXXVIII 17) as ‘Two sketches of Shipping’ in the Third Loan Collection selected by Ralph Wornum.
The leaf is very faded and discoloured from exposure.
