Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘30’ top right, inverted
Stamped in black ‘LXXXVII 30’ top right, inverted

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted and continued on folio 11 of this sketchbook (D05406; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 31), which Turner inscribed ‘Flushing’ and ‘Ostend’, this is a panoramic view of the coastline seen from offshore. Assuming the drawing dates from the same time as the others in the sketchbook, Turner must have made a trip across the North Sea to within sight of the shore despite the restrictions of the Napoleonic War.
