Joseph Mallord William Turner Lynmouth Harbour 1811

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Lynmouth Harbour 1811
D40294
Pencil on white wove paper, 200 x 324 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This drawing was not recorded by Finberg in his Turner Bequest Inventory.1 It is a slight continuation to the left of the distant hills in the view from Lynmouth’s pier on D08964 (CXXVI 18). The individual leaves of the sketchbook were apparently still oversewn together at that point (see the introduction), as the two parts of the drawing stop short of the stitch holes towards their inner edges.
On the recto of the present sheet (D08948; CXXVI 3) is another view of Lynmouth from nearby, which itself continues on D40295 (the verso of D08949; CXXVI 4). For other views of Lynmouth and nearby Lynton in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under D08948.

Technical notes:
There are five sets of stitch holes near the right-hand edge. There is a small piece missing at the bottom right corner, matching similar losses to adjacently numbered leaves (D08946–D08951, D40295; CXXVI 1–5a) and to D08964 (CXXVI 18).
