St Catherine’s Castle is seen from the cliffs above Penventinue Cove, looking east across the harbour to Polruan, with the blockhouse on the left and the ruin of St Saviour’s Chapel at the summit of the distant hill. The view continues a little way onto folio 21 recto opposite (D08892; CXXV 20), where the Fowey blockhouse and the distant tower of St Fimbarrus’s Church appear to the north-east.
There is another view of the castle from nearby in the contemporary Devonshire Coast, No.1 sketchbook (Tate D08390; Turner Bequest CXXIII 15a). The history and setting of the fortifications, as well as other Fowey views, are discussed under folio 19 verso (D08889; CXXV 18a).
