Here Turner looks north-west from the coast south of Mount Batten, across the Cattewater to the Citadel with the tower of St Andrew’s Church beyond. There is a later drawing of the fortress and church tower from further west in the Plymouth, Hamoaze sketchbook (Tate D09228; Turner Bequest CXXXI 11). The slight continuation at the left is from the drawing of Plymouth Sound on folio 4 verso opposite (D08868; CXXV 3a).
This is one of a series of sketches of Plymouth and nearby districts, running from folio 3 recto (D08866; CXXV 2) to folio 14 recto (D08880; CXXV 13); see the entry for the first of these for other Plymouth views.
