Joseph Mallord William Turner Inscription by Turner: Title of Sketchbook 1811

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Front Flyleaf:
Inscription by Turner: Title of Sketchbook 1811
D40821
Ink on off-white laid paper, 170 x 209 mm
Inscribed by Turner in ink ‘Corfe to Dartmouth’ centre
Stamped in black ‘CXXIV’ top right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The inscription indicates the parameters of the leg of Turner’s 1811 ‘Southern Coast’ tour covered by this sketchbook; views of Corfe Castle and Dartmouth appear towards the front and back respectively; Finberg’s phrasing implies that the sheet formed the cover at that time, but the book is now bound within a parchment cover (see the introduction to the sketchbook).
Technical notes:
There are a few stray ink splashes. As with the verso of the back endpaper as now bound (D41522), the paper is rubbed and darkened, a further indication that the endpapers originally formed the book’s cover.
Verso:
Blank, save for inscriptions: by Turner’s executors Charles Turner, Henry Scott Trimmer, Sir Charles Lock Eastlake and John Prescott Knight in ink ‘No 167 C Turner | H.S. Trimmer’ top left, and in pencil ‘C.L.E.’ and JPK’ immediately below; in pencil ‘CXXIV’ top right; and stamped in black ‘CXXIV’ top left.
