The ruined castle is seen from the north-east, showing the range above the North Terrace from near the mill pond in the valley of the Gatcombe Brook which skirts the north side of the castle.1 Strokes in the foreground may indicate a structure, perhaps a sluice or ‘mill dam’ as noted by Turner on folio 145 recto (D08636; CXXIII 142), regulating the flow from the pond to the stream.
For a discussion of Berry Pomeroy and other studies in this sketchbook, see the entry for the recto (D08628).

See local map, castle plan and ‘old print’ from a similar viewpoint in Deryck Seymour and Jack Hazzard, Berry Pomeroy Castle, Torquay 1982, pp.14, 18, 168 respectively.
Technical notes:
At the centre left of the sketch there is an ink blot showing through from the recto of the leaf, itself offset from the previous page, folio 140 verso (D08627; CXXIII 137a).
