Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Made in connection with Turner’s lectures as Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy, this rendering of an Ionic capital is based on a diagram from A Compleat Treatise on Perspective in Theory and Practice on the True Principles of Dr Brook Taylor (1775, pl.XXII, fig.104) [on left]) by the elder Thomas Malton (1726–1801). The guiding lines for the capital were traced from the lower right side of Diagram 52 (Tate D17070; Turner Bequest CXCV 100). For another construction of an Ionic capital see Tate D17098; Turner Bequest CXCV 127. See also Tate D40005 and, for a tracing, Tate D17071; Turner Bequest CXCV 101).
