The Rother or the Arun which it joins just east of Fittleworth are good for fishing, which must have been their attraction for Turner; views of the Arun are in his contemporary Petworth sketchbook (Tate D07512–D07536; D40276; Turner Bequest CIX). Here, the traffic on the river might be connected with the local quarrying industry.
