For Cockermouth Castle and Turner’s views in this sketchbook see Introduction. Here the view is across the Derwent towards the ‘Lands’ and the north curtain wall of the castle, with the outer gatehouse at left, the kitchen tower at centre and the round (archers’) tower at right. Turner has now found the basis of his picture Cockermouth Castle (Tate T03879; displayed at Petworth House)1 but he went on to make a more careful and developed drawing in his Petworth sketchbook (Tate D07536; Turner Bequest CIX 24) which must have served as his working study. Other views of the same side of the castle from more wooded vantage points are folios 17 and 18 of the present sketchbook (D07556, D07557).
