For Cockermouth Castle and views from this sketchbook see Introduction. The view is across the Derwent to the Lands and the north curtain wall of the castle, with the outer gatehouse at left, the kitchen tower at centre and the round (archers’) tower at right. This drawing is a more finished version of one in the Cockermouth sketchbook (Tate D07555; Turner Bequest CX 16). As Butlin and Joll observe, of all the drawings this is the closest to Turner’s painting Cockermouth Castle (Tate T0387; displayed at Petworth House),1 exhibited at Turner’s Gallery in 1810. It is certainly much nearer to the composition than D07526; Turner Bequest CIX 14 from the same sketchbook, which Finberg identifies as the study for it.
