The only single figure study in this sketchbook, and one of its most developed drawings, this is one of three leaves showing boats or boatmen; see also folios 9 and 11 (D04806, D04808). David Hill has suggested that the last of these, which shows a mountainous background, was drawn on the Urnersee, Lake Lucerne;1 it also includes a similar figure to this, more loosely drawn in pencil.
