On his way along the Rhine back towards France, Turner passed through Bad Säckingen, as it now is, just under twenty miles upstream from Basle. Turner’s view is taken from across the Rhine towards the old town, with Schloss Schönau, with its polygonal corner towers, at its heart and the covered wooden bridge which crosses the river towards the Swiss town of Stein on the right.
