Finberg’s title does not do justice to this subject. Besides the coach there may be a raft or boat in the foreground and at left is a large capstan or winch – not a house – to which the boat may be attached by a rope. A possible location for this sketch would be Laufenburg, where falls obstructed the progress of the Rhine and required boats to be raised and lowered for loading and unloading goods and passengers. For Laufenburg see chiefly folio 25 verso (D04681); there may be a further, very slight sketch of buildings in the town on the recto of the present leaf (D04665).
