Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
David Hill speculates that Turner’s second night out of Paris was spent at Autun.1 He made this general view of the town from a point beside the river, with the bridge in the foreground and the Porte d’Arroux – the Roman Porta Senonica leading to the Via Agrippa, and one of two gates which are among the town’s important Roman remains – on the left and the Romanesque cathedral of St-Lazare with its fifteenth-century belfry on the right. A closer and more detailed sketch of the gate is on folio 22 of this sketchbook (D04414).
