David Hill speculates that Turner’s second night out of Paris, on his way south across France to the Alps, was spent at Autun (see folios 20 and 22 of this sketchbook, D04412, D04414), and that he made the journey of some thirty-three miles on to Chalon-sur-Saône on the morning of his third day of travelling, reaching the town in time for lunch. Turner made two sketches; see also folio 18 (D04410).
