For Turner’s first sketch of Avallon, seen from the Auxerre road, see folio 10 of this sketchbook (D04402). This and one other slighter memorandum on folio 12 (D04404) were drawn as he looked back at the town from the road south towards Saulieu. Here, the Hôtel de Condé, the spired Porte d’Horloge and the clock tower of St-Lazare are seen in the centre of the old town.
