As David Hill suggests in correspondence with the author,1 this view may be effectively a continuation of that on folio 8 of this sketchbook (D04400), for which see catalogue note for Auxerre, and to which Turner’s inscription, meaning ‘Ditto’, refers. Both sketches of the town seen from the walls may have been the products of an evening walk.
