Not previously listed or described, the subject has been identified by David Hill in correspondence with the author.1 The Pointe Percée rises above Sallanches, south east of Geneva. Hill thinks this distant view of the mountains is a continuation of that towards Mont Blanc, probably taken from Sècheron near Geneva, facing it on folio 5 of this sketchbook (D04397). Turner passed close by the range on his way from Geneva to Chamonix and the Mont Blanc region. The watercolour marks seem to consist both of splashes, mainly in blue, and colour trials of a pinkish-ochre. Further trials are on the facing folio 5.
