The present page shows a large rock in the foreground of a view looking towards Seacliff House (continuing on folio 10; D13601; CLXVII 9); a mid eighteenth-century building situated a few hundred yards east of Tantallon Castle on the East Lothian coast. Turner stands on the beach at Auldhame near the Gegan rocks, from where he sketched Tantallon Castle (folios 8 verso–9; D13598–D13599; CCLXVII 8a–8b). There is another view of the building from a little closer up on folios 6 verso–7 (D13595–D13596; CCLXVII 6a–7), and from beneath on folio 8 (D13597; CLXVII 8).
