This double-page sketch (continued on folio 10; D13467) shows North and South Shields from the east near Tynemouth. South Shields is seen on the present page with the busy shipping lanes of the Tyne. The disc of the sun and its reflection in the river below indicate that it must be early evening.
At the top of the page is a rough sketch of buildings on a coastline or headland. This may depict North or South Shields, or perhaps it is the ruins of Tynemouth Priory and castle nearby.
See folio 13 for more information about Turner’s visit to North and South Shields and references to his other sketches.
