Continuing from folio 1 verso (D13450) is a view of North Shields from Fish Quay. From the quay the view looks west towards the harbour with the town shown on the present page. The steps up to the newer part of town which sits on a plateau above the quay can be seen at the right of the sketch, and behind the shacks (or ‘shiels’ from which the town gets its name) is the town’s High Light, one of two harbour lights, the other of which is shown on folio 1 verso. An inscription refers to a stack of ‘timber’ in the foreground.
See folio 13 (D13473) for more information about Turner’s visit to North and South Shields and references to his other sketches.
