Together with the drawing of the Pheasant’s Nest on folio 1 of the sketchbook (D10343) this drawing is likely to date from November 1818 when Turner was at Farnley Hall, according to Hill, Warburton and Tussey. See the Introduction to the sketchbook for their belief that these drawings and others of Wharfedale near Farnley at the back of the book were made on different occasions.
The drawing was used for a watercolour for Walter Fawkes of Farnley (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge).1 The title given here is the one most often attached to the watercolour but the same authors note that the most likely location of the subject is the Glen, leading away from Lake Tiny in Farnley Park. Hill, Warburton and Tussey point out that another watercolour, Lake Plantation, Farnley Hall (private collection)2 looks in the opposite direction towards the lake.
