The drawing on the upper part of this leaf is of the Twickenham end of James Paine’s Richmond Bridge, with the now demolished toll house; the inscribed numbers relate to the bridge’s balustrades. This is one of several drawings in this sketchbook, chiefly folios 19–20 (D10445D10447) leading towards the watercolour (British Museum, London)1 engraved by W.R. Smith in 1832 for Picturesque Views in England and Wales.
The sketch of Windsor overlaps slightly on to folio 10 verso of the sketchbook (D10429), part of which was torn out by Turner. It is one of a number in this book which seem to have informed Turner’s watercolour (British Museum, London)2 engraved by William Miller in 1831, also for England and Wales, as observed by Eric Shanes. Others include folios 10 verso, 11 verso–13 verso (D10429, D10431–D10435) and 90–91 (D10572–D10574; Turner Bequest CXL 82–3). However, drawings made around 1827 in the Windsor and St Anne’s Hill sketchbook (Tate D20559, D20560; Turner Bequest CCXXV 2, 2a) were probably more immediate sources.
