Finberg correctly identified the sketch as being for Shoeburyness Fisherman Hailing a Whitstable Hoy exhibited at Turner’s Gallery in 1809 (National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa).1 It differs from the picture in placing a man-of-war closer to the viewer and to the left instead of the right. For Walter Fawkes’s acquisition of the picture, having at first preferred Turner’s London (Tate N00483),2 see Introduction to the book. Other purchases by Fawkes from Turner are listed inside the back cover and on folio 53 (D40668, D06824). Butlin and Joll do not mention this sketch in their entry for Shoeburyness.
